Papertrey Ink WCMD Challenges

Good morning! Happy hump day! It's been a dreary week here so far and it has just started raining again.

Papertrey Ink issued four challenges on Saturday for World Card Making Day. I managed to make cards for two of the four challenges. My first card was for the third challenge, which had a theme of India, including gold, sequins, jewels, etc. This foil background paper from SEI's Moravia collection reminded me of this vine image from PTI's With Sympathy set. I stamped it in Versamark ink and heat embossed it with American Crafts' Gold Bling embossing powder. The flowers and the butterfly were punched out of copper foil, stamped with Versamark and also heat embossed with the gold Bling embossing powder. Gold beads were added to the centers of each.

The second card was for the fourth challenge, which was to use Dotted Outlines and/or Masking using an Australian theme. Since I am a SCUBA diver, when I think of Australia, I think of the Great Barrier Reef and fish. I used PTI's Polka Dot Basics set to outline my fish from Impression Obsession and to create the polka dot background panel. I masked the fish image to creat the polka dot outline and I used a white gel pen to do the dots at the top and bottom of the main background panel. I added three teardrop shaped dew drops in the upper left corner for water drops and to balance my sentiment.

WCMD Challenges

I had high hopes for spending all day Saturday in my stamp room playing along with the World Card Making Day challenges over at Splitcoast Stampers. There was a new challenge posted every hour from 10:00am to 11:00pm. It was a bit overwhelming and I learned that I am a very SLOW card maker! Some people made a card for each challenge during the hour the challenge was posted - how do they do that?? I barely figure out the stamps, papers and layout I'm going to use in an hour...sigh... I only managed to finish two cards for the challenges, plus a third card using a new toy I received on Friday, which I'll post another day.

This first card was made for the Crafty Secrets challenge, which was to make the card pop, using the image or an embellishment. I used a couple of images from the Feely Yucky set. I paper pieced the little nurse's uniform and popped up her arm with dimensional tape. The needle in her hand has Glossy Accents on it to give it a little pop, and I used a Cuttlebug folder to emboss the row of faux stitching on the red border strip. The background paper is from Jillibean Soup's Alphabet Soup collection and I thought it was perfect with the little nurse image since it reminds me of an eye chart.

The second card is for the Magnolia-licious Challenge, which was to make a Holiday Ornament - either an ornament to hang on the tree or a card with an ornament on it. I had this paper from BasicGrey's Eskimo Kisses collection so I used the ornament paper for part of the background and created an ornament as my focal point using a stamp from GinaK Designs Got Snow set. I cut the image out using a circle Nestabilities die and added a small square of silver paper, topped with a section of a scalloped circle to make the top of my ornament.

The image was colored with Copic markers and I masked it off and airbrushed the sky. I added some Polar White Flower Soft for the snow man and the ground, then added some Stickles for his buttons, nose, eyes and mouth. The sketch is from Jen del Muro's Sketch For You To Try (SFYTT) from Saturday.

This is a card I made for Scrap Chic Boutique using some new patterned papers I recently received. The piece with the cherries and the strip with the pies are from Webster's Pages' Sweet as Cherry Pie collection and the woodgrain background paper is called Woodland and it's from Basic Grey's new Eskimo Kisses collection.

The Pie in the Window stamp is from Lockhart Stamp Company and was colored with Copic markers. I added some Flower Soft (Sweet Pea and Spring) to the flowers in the window box. You can't tell from the photo, but there is also a piece of acetate behind the curtains to make it look more like a window. I thought this sentiment, from Papertrey Ink's Quilter's Sampler set was perfect with the pie in the window.

Happy Birthday

I made this card for the Caardvarks March 20th sketch challenge. The focal image is from a brass stencil, which I embossed and then colored using chalks while the paper was still on the stencil. Of course I had to make the bird a robin...The image was cut out using an oval Nestabilities die and while it was still in the die, I chalked the blue sky background. I created an eye for my robin with a drop of copper Stickles.

The card base is my favorite Kraft paper from Papertrey Ink and all the other papers are from the BasicGrey Marrakech line. Across the striped paper, I placed some green ric rac, which was then topped with a flower and a couple of buttons. The buttons were tied together with some brown Scrapper's Floss.

The sentiment was stamped with Memento Rich Cocoa ink and then cut out using a double ended tag die. While it was still in the die, I also chalked the background so it would match the bird image. Since the tag was too long for the card, I cut off the right end with some scallop edge scissors and then put a coordinating brad from the Marrakech line through the remaining hole.

Happy Easter Basket

I made this card to play along with this weekend's Cupcake Challenge over at Taylored Expressions. The basket of flowers, Happy Easter sentiment and chicks are from Flourishes' Signs of Spring set. I colored the images with Copic markers and added a little Sweet Pea Flower Soft to the hyacinths in the basket. I stamped the two chicks separately, cut them out and popped them up with some foam squares.

The image was cut out using my Labels Two Nestabilities and I used my Stampin' UP! Really Rust marker to add some dots around the edge of the main panel. The flower is from Stampin' UP! and was airbrushed with a Copic marker to match the mat color. I topped it with an orange button, tied with some Scrapper's Floss. All the papers are from Basic Grey's Marrakesh 6x6 paper pad.

Here's a close-up of the Flower Soft. It's pretty neat stuff and adds some nice texture and interest to flower images.

WSC73 - Happy Easter

This card was made using Beate's weekend sketch challenge, hosted this week by Cambria Turnbow.

I received this Signs of Spring set from Flourishes last week and thought it would be perfect for this sketch and combined with this patterned paper from Dream Street Papers Heartsong collection. The card stock is all from Prism - the Teal Pack and the Desert Coral Pack.

I stamped the two little chicks and the daffodil on Cryogen White paper, then colored them with Copic markers to match the colors in the patterned paper, and then added a little shimmer by coloring over each image with a Copic Lemon Spica glitter pen. Each image was punched out using a 1" punch, then matted on a scalloped square. The top edges of the white and teal mats were cut with a Fiskars Lace border punch.

The Happy Easter sentiment was also stamped on Cryogen White paper and cut out using a Circle Nestability, as was its mat. I added three Dew Drops from the The Robin's Nest, Water collection. I think that about covers it!

Spring Birthday wishes

When I went on the road last week, I took a bunch of supplies with me to make some cards for Scrap Chic Boutique. I had tried to plan ahead the cards I wanted to make using the patterned papers I had been given. I was a bit overzealous with the amount of paper and stamps I took with me, thinking that I was going to have lots of time to work on cards. I only completed 4 cards, and ended up lugging most of it back, unused.

This is one of the cards I did manage to complete. As soon as I saw this patterned paper from Dream Street Papers' Heartsong collection, I knew I wanted to pair it with this Fiskars eyelet punch, which I had seen before, but did not own. So that meant a trip to JoAnn's to use my 40% coupon and pick one up. I have to say, I'm not particularly happy with it at this point. It doesn't cut a smooth, continuous border and it doesn't emboss as well as I'd like. I'm a bit frustrated with it, but still trying to get the hang of it and make sure it's not the paper I'm using or operator error. Time will tell...

At any rate, I stamped the butterfly and the sentiment from Papertrey Ink's Butterfly Kisses set. Since I was on the road, I didn't have my Nestabilities, so I just cut the layers using my portable paper trimmer and then used the eyelet border punch on the bottom of the panel with the stamped images. I tied a bow using Papertrey Ink's Aqua Mist satin ribbon and then added some Taylor's Tiny Twinkles above the bow and throughout the butterfly. The pink patterned paper is just the back side of the Dream Street Paper. Definitely not much to this card, but I like the color combo and the spring feel it has.

The bad blogger is back....

Wow...forgive me readers, it's been 11 days since I've blogged...sounds like confession...

Anywhooo, here I am again. This has just been one of the craziest of months around here - please forgive me for being so bad about blogging. I am finally home, after being out of town for 8 days - partly for work and partly for pleasure. The part that was for pleasure was very fun and included attending a Copic Certification class this past weekend! So, now I'm not only certifiable, I'm also certified! Probably the most important thing I learned from the class is the need to continue to practice, practice, practice.

This card is one I made before I went out of town, and intended to post it from the road, but time just got away from me. This is some more glittery patterned paper from My Mind's Eye's Laundry Line - Coastal collection. Since I've needed so many sympathy cards lately, I guess I was still in that frame of mind when I made this one. The quote is a little hard to read in the photo, but it says "May hope sustain you, friends surround you, and love give you strength.".

The main panel was stamped with Brilliance Pearlescent Copper ink and I used Papertrey Ink's With Sympathy set and a Nestabilities Label One die to cut and emboss the panel. The rhinestones in the flower centers and the butterfly are Taylor's Tiny Twinkles. The buttons are from Papertrey Ink and 7 Gypsies and were threaded with embroidery floss. The flower behind the center buttons was a plain white one from Stampin' UP! that I colored with the Copper ink. The crochet trim is from my stash.

The chipboard pieces on the top and bottom of the card are also from the My Mind's Eye Laundry Line collection, and were originally a single, 12" long piece, that I cut it into sections to fit the card. I added some Dew Drops in the left corners to add a little something to it.

Spring is here!

It appears that Spring is here in Atlanta, at least for the foreseeable future. It's supposed to be in the 70s for the next five days. I'm looking forward to it! The birds are chirping like crazy outside and it's driving one of my cats nuts! She sits and looks out our sunroom window at them and swishes her tail and whines. Then she gets frustrated and takes a nap. Ahhh, the life of a cat!

I made this card a couple of weeks ago for Beate's weekend sketch challenges (WSC69), but didn't get to submit it. I love this little Garden Friends stamp set from Penny Black and decided it would work perfectly with this American Crafts Backyard Crackle paper.

I stamped the chick with the egg three times on white paper using Memento Tuxedo Black ink, and then stamped it over the eggs on the patterned paper so I could paper piece the eggs on the chicks to match the paper. All of the chicks were all colored with Copic markers (Y11, Y15, Y35, Y38). The panel with the three chicks in the eggs was popped up with some foam tape.

The sentiment and the group of chicks stacked on top of one another were stamped on Cryogen white paper and colored with the same Copics as the other chicks, plus a green for the grass and a pink to highlight the word spring, but I'm afraid I didn't note the colors I used for those areas.

The blue brads are from Queen & Co. and the striped grosgrain ribbon is from Stampin' UP!. I layered a couple of buttons and tied a bow around them with a burlap string and adhered them to the center of the bow. That's about it for this card!

Plant a seed of friendship

I created this card using the CPS104 sketch from March 22nd. The embossed and glittered patterned paper is from Mind Mind's Eye's Laundry Line collection (Sundress Heirloom) and the rust colored paper I used for my mats is from BasicGrey's Marrakech collection (African Nectar).

The flower stamp is an old one from Hero Arts and was colored using Copic markers (E11, E35, R02, YR00, YR41, Y26, YG95, G99,0). The sentiment is from Cornish Heritage Farms. Both stamped panels were sponged/distressed using Ranger Distress Inks (Antique Linen and Vintage Photo). The ribbon is from May Arts. Here's a close up of the glittery embossed background:

Christmas Wishes

I'm a bit strapped for things to post at the moment since I've been working on Christmas gifts and Christmas cards exclusively for the last couple of weeks and can't post those just yet. I'll have a lot to share after Christmas! I'm happy to say that I am finished with all of it and now just have a few little things to wrap up and put under the tree.

This is a quick card I made a while ago, but never posted. There's not much to it - the Santa was punched from the same paper I used for this card. I cut the two mat layers using my Nestabilities. I tied the satin ribbon around the flourish patterned background paper and added a bow above the circles - it looks a bit like a Christmas ornament, I think.

Taylor's Cupcake Challenge and Tim Holtz Mask

This card was made using the sketch for Friday's Taylor's Cupcake Challenge. I needed to make a card using the Tim Holtz Flourish mask, so I used it to make the background for this card.

I thought I was being really clever when I pulled the mask off its original sheet, which is the mask material adhered to a transparency. There was a lot of unused area around the flourish, so I decided to try cutting my own mask in that space. I ran four different Spellbinder's dies through my Wizard three separate times and it still didn't cut through completely. I used a craft knife to finish off the cuts, which didn't work too well on one of the shapes and I ended up throwing it away.

I used the three remaining 'masks' to make my three elements on the left side of the card instead of the squares that were called for in the sketch. As you can see by the top flourish, the adhesive on my 'homemade' masks wasn't nearly as strong as it was on the real mask on the right side, so some of my ink ended up under the mask. Oh well, live and learn. I hate wasting things, but in this case, it just wasn't usable. I threw the makeshift masks away as soon as I finished this card!

The real mask, on the other hand, works great and was fun to use. I sponged two different shades of Distress inks over the masks to give that vintage look. The Santa postage stamp image was also stamped with Distress Ink and cut out with my postage stamp decoritive edged scisors. The edges of all the layers were sponged with Distress Inks. I topped the card off with that fun reindeer ribbon - I don't know who makes it, but I love it and only have two reindeer left!

Thinking of you!

When I received my compressor for my Copic airbrush system a few weeks ago, I pulled out a blank piece of white paper and a couple of my favorite color Copic markers and started playing around with airbrushing. When I did this background, I decided to pull this new stamp that I hadn't used yet out of my 'new toys that need to be played with' basket and stamped it in black on top of the airbrushed background. It's not perfect by any stretch, but I still liked it.

Fast forward a week or two, and I received this patterned paper from Scrap Chic Boutique that I needed to make a card with, and the two just seemed to go together to me. I hate to waste scraps, so this was a great way to make use of my practice airbrush piece!

Recently I've seen a couple of people post on their blogs about adhering Dew Drops to ribbon, which I have to admit had not ever occurred to me, so I decided to try it on this card. The ric rac was perfect , and it matched the background paper, so I perched a few Dew Drops in the peaks and there you have it!

The sentiment was stamped on some Stampin' UP! Whisper White card stock and the little flowers over the i's were colored in with my blue Spica pen. I also went over the letters of the sentiment and the larger areas of the scroll image with a clear Spica pen to add a bit of shine to them. And the sentiment is strategically placed to cover up a really dark spot in my airbrushing! As I have said many times, most of my cards are an exercise in fixing a mistake!

Hope you're having a good week. I received some really sad news today about one of my clients in Pennsylvania. He had a heart attack while raking leaves yesterday and passed away at the age of 56. He was a really nice man and he will be greatly missed. So, my heart is a bit heavy tonight, thinking about his family and co-workers, and remembering the night a little over 13 years ago when my family went through the same thing and my father passed away after having a heart attack. At least my father lived to be 76, but even that seems young to me, the older I get!

Sweet Little Baby

I've had the Bitty Baby Blessings stamps from Papertrey Ink for a while but just got around to unpacking them this weekend. I stamped the little elephant three times - twice on pink paper and once on patterned paper. I cut out the one on the patterned paper and adhered it on top of one of the images on pink paper with some foam tape. Next I cut out the ear from the second pink paper image and adhered it on top of the patterned paper version with foam dimensionals from Stampin'UP!. These are only 1/16th of an inch thick so they are thinner than the foam tape, but still give a bit of dimension to it. I added a Heidi Swapp jewel for the eye and paper pierced some holes in each corner of the olive mat. Sorry the photo is a bit dark.

I experimented with something on the ribbon - I ran it through my Wizard with one of my Cuttlebug border embossing folders to emboss some flowers in it. I passed it through three different times and you can barely see the embossing, so that was a bust on this particular ribbon. I'll try it on some other ribbon, though, because I've seen it on other cards, so I know it works in some situations. If at first you don't succeed....

This card was made using Taylor's Cupcake Challenge sketch from last Friday.

The card base is kraft card stock from Papertrey Ink and the three paper strips are the same paper I used in the last card - Glitz Design Kringle Flourish.

The wreaths are the center of an Outlines stamp and were colored in with my Copic markers. They are mounted using foam tape on 1 inch circles of Core'dinations Black Magic, which I lightly sanded to make the red show through the black.

The joy sticker is from Me and My Big Ideas. Three little bows were added on the left side to finish it off. A very simple little card.

Ho Ho Ho!

I made this card using last week's sketch challenge over at Splitcoast Stamper's. How are these for non-traditional Christmas colors?

I've had this Outlines stamp for a while but hadn't ever used it, and I thought it paired well with this Santa paper from Glitz Design. You can't tell from the photo, but there are three layers to the stamped image. I stamped the entire image three times, then cut out the holly/scroll frame and mounted that on top of the full image with some foam tape and then cut out the Ho Ho Ho layer from the third stamping and mounted it a little higher with a double layer of foam tape. And I can hardly believe it - I didn't use any Nestabilities on this card! I actually made two cards today and didn't use the Nestabilities on either one.

The image was colored with Copic markers, including the red and green borders. The diamond shapes were colored with a gold metallic pen, then topped with some gold Stickles. The holly berries also had some Stickles added to give them a little sparkle and dimension. Finally, I went over the black scrolls with my black Copic Spica marker to add a bit more shine.

Hope you had a nice weekend, I certainly did! My Krafty Kat friends came over Saturday for lunch and an afternoon of stamping related fun. They showered me with lovely cards and gifts for my birthday, which was Saturday. They are a wonderful bunch of women and I am so thrilled to have been asked to join the group.

Raspberries

This is a new Fiskars punch I picked up a couple of weeks ago and have been itching to use . It is a combination corner and border punch. The background paper is the reverse side of the paper I used for my last post (Give Thanks). The raspberries were colored with my Sugarloaf Whispers markers and then spritzed with a little water before I stamped the image on the chipboard label. I outlined the raspberries with my pink Spica marker and added a little yellow Spica to the flower stamens. The edges were inked with some Ranger Distress Inks and it was adhered to the card with foam tape.

Give Thanks

We are feeling a little bit of Fall in the air here in Atlanta - the lows are in the low 60's and it's nice and crisp in the mornings. So, with that in mind, I made this card for Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge. The butterflies were cut out with Spellbinder's Butterflies 2 dies. I rubbed some of the Metallic Rub-ons over them to bring out the texture of the cardstock. I added some rhinestones to the middle of each to give them a little body....har, har, har...

I did a little paper piercing in each of the left hand corners to add a little something in those bare spots. I dressed up the pattern paper by going over all the veins and outlines of the leaves with my clear Copic Spica marker - it really adds a nice sparkle that is so difficult to photograph. I also ran it over my sentiment to give it a little sparkle. Not much else to it.

Butterfly Wishes

This is my entry for Taylor's Cupcake Challenge this weekend, although I didn't use a cupcake image....I needed to make a card for Scrap Chic Boutique using the butterfly die and the patterned paper, so this sketch worked well.

I finally got around to using the CrafT Products Metallic Rub-ons that I bought at a stamp show a year ago....they are very fun and I'll be sure to use them some more. I used them on the embossed butterfly and I think it really makes the textures pop.

There's not a whole lot to this card (I seem to say that a lot....). I stamped a flourish in the bottom left and upper right corners because I have a hard time with white space. All of the swirls in the flourish stamps were colored over with my clear Spica marker, as were the purple swirls in the patterned paper. I also scribbled it all over the butterfly - I wish all the sparkle showed up in the photo.

The mats were all cutout with my Nestabilities. A little bling in the center of the butterfly and that's the card. Thanks for coming by. Hope you have a great week!

Got Snow?

I love the way this little card turned out. The paper is from October Afternoon - they have some terrific papers. I'm not sure why, but as soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to do a winter-themed card. I also took this opportunity to play with my Copic airbrush system.

I stamped the image on Papertrey Ink Stamper's Select White and colored it with my Copic markers. I cut it out with a circle Nestability die, and while it was still in the die, I masked the image and airbrushed the sky in blue, then took it out of the die, masked the top portion and airbrushed the grass. The edges were distressed with Ranger Antique Linen Distress Ink. The scalloped mat is the reverse side of the patterned paper and was cut out with a scalloped Nestability die.

The card base is Papertrey Ink Kraft card stock. I wrapped the ribbon around the patterned paper, and adered it to the card base. I stamped the sentiment and cut it out with a Spellbinders label die. While it was still in the die, I airbrushed it with the same markers as the sky and then distressed it with the Antique Linen ink. I also distressed the ribbon with the Antique Linen ink to tone it down and keep it more in line with the vintage look of the rest of the card. It was attached to the ribbon with two brads and then I adhered the bow to the ribbon strip with some glue dots. That's about it!
